About the maker
Matome Collection was founded in 2025 in Takasaki city, Gunma prefecture, Japan - though the founder, Josh, is originally from Canada. He fell in love with life in Japan and now seeks to share his love for the culture and craftsmanship he has come to observe here.
He works out of a garage attached to an abandoned house (akiya) in a suburban area, performing every step of pen creation from casting the resins, turning the pens, polishing, packaging and shipping. Every pen is a labour of love.
Our logo is the hiragana for the word ‘matome’ in a casual script, encircled by an ensō, a zen symbol signifying (among other things) freedom, enlightenment, or the universe.
What is ‘Matome?’
Matome (pronounced Maw-toe-may) is a Japanese word with several meanings, but the meaning we use here is ‘collection.’ Meaning the brand name is ‘Collection collection,’ or maybe instead ‘collection of collections.’
Throughout my life, I have had a tendency to develop new passions and preoccupations, and this usually led to a new collection of things to cherish. From collecting toys and video games in childhood to collecting books, typewriters, and finally pens in adulthood, I view my time researching, acquiring and curating the parts of these collections as time well spent.
My concept for Matome, the feeling that I really want to capture, is the same kind of unbridled enthusiasm one feels when discovering a new passion - I think there is something really admirable and pure about the way a person can focus their whole being on something that they find interesting, and I try to capture this feeling of fascination whenever I can.
Everybody has a collection. Some of us collect things, or memories of experiences or friendships - or more often, we collect all three. A person is a living network of interconnected concepts, experiences, places and things. In a way I think WE are the collection, one that is constantly adding to itself. This continuous growth and fascination with the joyous task of life is what makes our time here on earth worthwhile.
